With
our focus clearly being inexpensive online eyewear, we asked ourselves what we
could and therefore should, be doing to lessen the impact our industry has on
the environment and at the same time improve people's lives where possible. We
came to a win-win conclusion - it's about recycling old pairs of glasses.
The
World Health Organization estimates that 153 million people around the world
have poor eyesight due to uncorrected refractive errors (more commonly known as
near-sightedness, far-sightedness, and astigmatism). Refractive errors can be
easily diagnosed, measured and corrected with spectacles, yet millions of
people in developing countries do not have access to these basic services.
If you feel you can help just ask yourselves, do you have old spectacles which
you no longer wear? If so you may pass them onto charities local within your
country. In the UK, Vision Aid Overseas is a registered charity, who through its work refurbishes
re-usable glasses and supplies them to developing countries. You can either
post your old spectacles to VAO
or alternatively send them to us
and we'll forward them onto VAO after refurbishing them. If you decide to send them to us, please
indicate clearly on the first line of the address the following department:
Recycle old glasses
If you are outside of the UK, you can get in touch with
Lions Club International
who provide details of 17 eyeglasses recycling centres worldwide (most are located in the US).
You may also have an old pair of sunglasses lying around or even protective
cases. Specs Store is currently working on a new project which will ensure all
these unwanted items find users. We'll have more details shortly.
We thank you for your continued support.
